Toshiba reported to close TV factories abroad

(Reuters) - Electronic manufacturers, including Toshiba Corp <6502.T> and Hitachi Ltd <6501.T>, are planning to consolidate flat-panel television factories outside Japan and expand outsourcing to cut costs, the Nikkei business daily reported.

Toshiba plans to end assembly of liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions at a British unit's Plymouth factory by the end of this year affecting about 250 jobs or 80 percent of the workforce, the newspaper reported.

Hitachi has shut down a flat-TV production plant in the Czech Republic affecting about 800 employees at the site, it added.

The company is considering outsourcing production for the European market to contract electronics manufacturers, the newspaper said.

Nikkei also said Sony Corp <6758.T> has plans to shut down its television production facility in Japan's Aichi Prefecture, which is one of the country's sub-national jurisdictions, by next month.

In January, Sony had said it plans to consolidate two TV production factories in Aichi Prefecture as part of efforts to turn around its struggling electronics business.
